[SC] Purchasable Resource adds a complete paid-resource workflow to XenForo Resource Manager. Resource authors can sell digital downloads using XenForo’s existing payment profiles while keeping files and external download URLs protected from unauthorized members.
Purchasable settings are integrated directly into the normal XFRM resource creation and editing workflow—no manual resource ID entry is required.
Requirements
- XenForo 2.3.7 or newer
- XenForo Resource Manager 2.3.7 or newer
- PHP 7.2 or newer
- PHP 8.3 recommended
- MySQL 5.7 or newer
- MariaDB and Percona compatible
- At least one active XenForo payment profile for paid resources
- PHP file uploads enabled when using locally hosted file delivery
For locally uploaded products, the server’s upload_max_filesize and post_max_size values must be large enough for the configured product file limit.
XenForo compatibility
- XenForo 2.3.7+
- XenForo Resource Manager 2.3.7+
- Compatible with the XenForo 2.3 series, including 2.3.12
- Not compatible with XenForo 2.2
Features
Integrated XFRM workflow
- Adds “Purchasable Resource” as an available XFRM resource type.
- Can be enabled separately for each resource category.
- Purchase settings appear directly on the normal Add resource form.
- Purchase settings remain available on the standard Edit resource page.
- Automatically associates the purchase configuration with the newly created XFRM resource.
- No manual resource ID entry is required.
- Existing configured categories and resources are preserved during upgrades.
- Purchasable resources use XFRM’s fileless-resource structure while the add-on securely controls the actual delivery.
Paid and free resources
- Set an individual price for every resource.
- Supports standard three-letter currency codes such as USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, and AUD.
- Configurable default currency.
- Explicit “Free” option for no-cost resources.
- Prevents accidentally creating a free resource by leaving all payment profiles unchecked.
- Paid resources require a valid price and at least one selected payment profile.
- Supports one-time purchases without recurring billing.
XenForo payment integration
- Uses XenForo’s native payment-profile system.
- Works with active payment providers configured through XenForo, including PayPal and Stripe.
- Allows one or multiple payment profiles to be offered for each resource.
- Displays a separate purchase button for each available payment method.
- Sends the resource title as the payment title and transaction description.
- Uses XenForo’s normal checkout, purchase-request, callback, and payment-log systems.
- Does not rely on the customer simply returning from the payment provider.
- Access is granted only after XenForo receives a verified successful payment callback.
Reliable transaction handling
- Completed payments automatically grant download access.
- Reinstated payments can restore access.
- Duplicate callbacks are processed safely and do not create duplicate access records.
- Refunds, reversals, and chargebacks revoke access associated with the affected transaction.
- Reversing an older transaction does not remove access granted by a later valid repurchase.
- Transaction IDs, provider details, payment profile, amount, currency, status, and purchase date are recorded.
Protected delivery options
Each resource can use one of two delivery methods:
- Protected external URL
- Locally uploaded protected file
External URLs are stored by the add-on and are not placed in XFRM’s public download field. Authorized buyers are redirected only after passing the entitlement check.
Locally uploaded files are stored in XenForo’s internal-data filesystem rather than a publicly accessible web directory. Files are served only after the member’s download permission and purchase status have been verified.
Additional file-delivery features include:
- Configurable maximum product file size
- Default maximum size of 200 MB
- Replacement of previously uploaded product files
- Automatic removal of the old file when switching delivery methods
- Blocking of potentially dangerous executable and script extensions
- Preservation of the original filename and file size
- Controlled download responses for authorized members
Purchase and download permissions
Adds a dedicated “Purchasable resources” permission group containing:
- View purchasable resources
- Purchase resources
- Download purchased resources
- Bypass purchase requirement
Permission checks can be enabled or disabled separately for viewing, purchasing, and downloading.
The bypass permission is not automatically granted during installation.
Resource-author access
- Resource authors can download their own products without purchasing them.
- Author bypass can be enabled or disabled through the add-on options.
- Administrators or trusted user groups can receive the bypass-purchase permission.
Buyer experience
- Professionally styled purchase panel displayed directly on the resource page.
- Displays the product title and formatted price.
- Dedicated purchase buttons for available payment profiles.
- Login prompt for guests attempting to purchase.
- “Purchased access” status for existing buyers.
- “Download now” button for authorized members.
- Clear messages when the member lacks permission or payment methods are unavailable.
- Dedicated “My purchases” page.
- Purchase-history pagination.
- Buyers can revisit and download active purchases from their history.
Administrative management
- Hidden administrative management route for existing configurations and transaction records.
- View all configured purchasable resources.
- View purchase records for an individual resource.
- Displays buyer, purchase date, amount, transaction ID, payment status, and download count.
- Administrators can manually revoke or reinstate individual purchase records.
- Resource Manager administrative permission is required to access management pages.
- Purchase-ledger records are retained when an individual resource is deleted for accounting history.
Download tracking
- Tracks the number of downloads associated with each purchase.
- Stores the last download date.
- Can optionally increment the standard XFRM resource download counter.
- Download counting works with external URLs and locally hosted files.
Configurable options
- Default currency
- Require view permission
- Require purchase permission
- Require download permission
- Allow resource authors to bypass purchasing
- Increment the normal XFRM download counter
- Maximum locally uploaded product file size
Installation and upgrades
- Extract the ZIP.
- Upload everything inside the upload directory to the XenForo installation root.
- Allow existing add-on files to be overwritten when upgrading.
- Open Admin CP → Add-ons.
- Install or upgrade [SC] Purchasable Resource.
When upgrading from an earlier release, do not uninstall the old version first. A normal XenForo add-on upgrade preserves existing purchase configurations and transaction records.
